We’ve all said it. I just need to get back on track.
Maybe it’s after a vacation. A busy season at work. An illness or injury. Or a training cycle that didn’t go as planned.
The phrase feels harmless, but it carries an assumption: there’s one ideal routine, you’ve somehow left it behind, and success depends on finding your way back.
But what if there isn’t just one track?
A New Perspective
Think about training for a race.
Whether you’re preparing for your first 5K, gravel ride, or triathlon, chances are you’ve adjusted your training plan along the way. Maybe the weather changed. You got sick. Work travel got in the way. You swapped workouts, shortened a long session, or took an extra recovery day.
You probably didn’t see those adjustments as failure. They were simply part of the process because the goal wasn’t to follow the plan perfectly. It was to continue making progress despite changing circumstances.
Yet it’s often harder to apply that same flexibility to the routines that support our health and performance. When those routines are interrupted, it’s easy to assume you’ve failed or that the only solution is to recreate exactly what worked before.
Curiosity Instead of Restarting
One of the most valuable skills is learning to approach change with curiosity rather than assuming there’s only one right way forward.
What worked six months ago may not be what works today. Your schedule may be different. Your priorities may have shifted. Even your goals may have evolved.
Instead of viewing those changes as a reason to start over, consider them an opportunity to discover what works for your life now.
Maybe you don’t need to get back on track. Maybe you just need to move forward from where you are.
So the next time you catch yourself saying, I just need to get back on track, pause for a moment. Then ask yourself: What’s realistic for me right now?
