Fuel Your Vision: How to Define, Align, and Achieve Your Health & Performance Goals

What’s driving you to achieve your health and performance goals? Is it a vision of crossing the finish line with a personal best, feeling stronger and more energetic in daily life, or simply loving the way your body performs? Whatever it is, defining your “why” and creating a clear vision can be the key ingredient to success.

1. Start with Your Vision and “Why”

Your vision is the foundation of every goal you set; it’s the big picture that gives meaning to your efforts. Without a clear vision, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or lose motivation when challenges arise.

Think of your vision like a compass—it not only shows you where you’re headed but also helps you prioritize your next steps along the way. Start by reflecting on what health and performance mean to you personally. When your vision aligns with your values, goals become less about willpower and more about fulfilling your purpose.

2. Outcome Goals vs. Behavior Goals: The Secret to Taking Action

It’s tempting to focus solely on outcome goals, like losing 10 pounds or finishing a century ride. While outcome goals are important, they don’t tell you how to get there. That’s where behavior goals come in to show you the way.

Behavior goals focus on specific actions you will take to achieve your desired outcome. For example:

  • Outcome Goal: Complete a 50-mile ride at an average pace of 17 mph
  • Behavior Goal: Complete 3 training rides per week

By breaking down your goals into actionable behaviors, you’ll have a clear roadmap for success.

3. Make Sure Your Goals are SMART

To turn your vision into reality, it’s essential to create SMART goals. Here’s how it works:

  • Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve. (e.g. “complete a 50 mile ride at an average pace of 17 mph.”)
  • Measurable: Include metrics to track progress. (e.g. “# of completed training rides.”)
  • Attainable: Set goals that stretch you without being unrealistic.  If you’re unsure if you are able to reach the goal, consider breaking down into smaller pieces (e.g. complete a 25-mile ride at 17mph).
  • Relevant: Ensure your goals align with your broader vision, values, and ‘why’.
  • Timebound: Set a deadline to create urgency and focus. (e.g. “achieve this goal within 12 weeks.”)

When your goals are SMART, they’re more than just aspirations, they’re clear and actionable.

4. Turning SMART Goals into Action Plans

Now that you have a SMART goal, what specific actions are you ready, willing and able to take to make progress on your goals?  By taking consistent action against the goal and tracking your progress, your outcome goal becomes a reality.

Focus on selecting one or at most two actions you can take daily or a few times a week to move you toward your goal—actions you’re confident you can do & track your progress.

For example, to complete a 50-mile ride at 17mph, you elect to taking action by completing 3 rides per week: 2 interval rides (one with hill repeats because you know the hills a-plenty on the course you are riding), and one longer endurance ride of 90′. If you are already doing this successfully, you may choose to focus on extending the duration of your sessions or start to work on dialing in your fueling by adding a carbohydrate-based snack before and during rides.

Taking action & tracking progress helps creates momentum and increases confidence in achieving your goal. Try it for yourself! Check out these resources to help you define specific actions that help you bring your goal to life:

5. Anticipate Obstacles and Build Your Support System

Even the best-laid plans face roadblocks—whether it’s a hectic schedule, unexpected injuries, or dips in motivation. Life happens. The key is to plan for these obstacles and leverage support systems to keep you on track.

Here’s are a few ideas on how to set yourself up for success:

  • Environment: Create spaces that support your goals (e.g. keep snacks & hydration handy, set up a dedicated workout area, put out clothes the night before).
  • Time Management: Schedule workouts and meal prep like any other important appointment.
  • Accountability: Partner with a coach, join a community, or enlist a friend to help keep you on track.

Another useful approach to obstacles shared on the ride is taking time to reflect on the obstacle after it happened and asking how you might anticipate and plan for it next time it arises.

Need help navigating obstacles? Having a solid game plan and accountability system can make all the difference.
